What’s Really Holding You back?
When I’m talking to my clients about how they are feeling about the thought of trying to go back to work, there are a lot of the same words.
Uncertain, insecure, lacking in confidence, no self esteem, overwhelmed…and I don’t doubt them for a second because I have been there myself.
But if I say to them ‘what are you fearful of’ they quite often just go quiet and look at me blankly.
“What do you mean?” they ask me.
One of the biggest motivators in life (and it is said there are 3) is fear. But the trick is we don’t always see it for that – it is disguised as something else.
Fear gets in our way everyday…if we let it.
Many people live their whole lives in fear without even realising that is what they are doing. The power comes when you start to see the signs that it is fear driving your thinking and actions because then you can stop it. Challenge it and change it to be something that helps you rather than holds you back.
Most mums are so wrapped up in fear they aren’t even aware of it.
What they are really experiencing when they are thinking about going back to work is;
- Fear of rejection
- Fear of judgment
- Fear of criticism
- Fear of failure
- Fear of regret
- Fear of uncertainty
And one that very few give time to consider;
- Fear of success.
When you first consider it, it’s easy to dismiss it and think no, that’s not me. But I challenge you to really think about that thing (whatever it is) that you have been putting off doing. Why haven’t you done it? Really? Now go back to that list and consider which one of these fears is likely to be the culprit. (If I had to guess, I’d say it’s probably fear of judgement or rejection…) Understanding your fears is a bit like peeling an onion, it’s layers upon layers…
When we work together we work out what these fears are (really) and then we make a plan to deal with each one because they can absolutely be overcome.
